Powering up our grit: why resilience matters more than ever

There’s a buzzword we hear a lot in coaching and change circles: resilience.
It's often paired with images of someone bouncing back, powering through, smiling stoically through the storm.
But real resilience?
It’s deeper than that. It’s grittier. Messier. And far more necessary than we sometimes like to admit.
In a world that rarely pauses, that values fast success and overnight results, resilience is the quiet skill that keeps us in the game.
Resilience is not just “toughing it out”
Let’s be clear... resilience isn’t about pushing until you break. It’s about knowing how to bend without snapping. It’s the capacity to face challenge, uncertainty, even failure, and still stay in the arena. Not out of obligation, but because you know what you're building matters.
Resilience is the voice that says,
“This is hard, and I don’t have all the answers… but I’m not done yet.”
And when we talk about grit... that long-term stamina for your goals, we’re talking about the fuel that resilience runs on. Grit is your inner battery. The bit that keeps going when motivation wears off.
Why we need grit to succeed
Grit is the unsung hero of every success story. It’s easy to get inspired by someone’s highlight reel, but what we don’t always see are the sleepless nights, the doubts, the moments of wanting to throw in the towel.
Every time you show up for your dreams after a setback, you are actively powering up your grit. You’re reminding yourself that your goals are bigger than your fears.
The truth is, success isn't linear. It’s rarely glamorous. It's built on small, consistent acts of belief – especially when belief is hard to come by.
The human side of grit
Let’s bring this back to the human experience. You’re allowed to be tired. You’re allowed to pause. Resilience isn’t about ignoring how you feel, it’s about learning how to process and continue. Sometimes powering up your grit looks like rest. Sometimes it looks like asking for help. And sometimes it’s just saying, “Not today but I’ll try again tomorrow.”
There’s power in not giving up. There’s strength in starting again. And there’s magic in being someone who chooses to keep going, even when it would be easier not to.
So, how do you build grit?
Start by getting honest with yourself:
What do you care about enough to keep showing up for?
Where are you letting fear or comfort hold you back?
And who are you becoming in the process of trying?
Then build routines that support your energy, not just your output. Set boundaries. Celebrate small wins. And surround yourself with people who remind you why you started.
Success isn’t about being the most talented. It’s about being the most committed.
So...
Powering up your grit isn’t about becoming unbreakable. It’s about becoming unstoppable... not because you never fall, but because you always get back up. That’s what resilience really is. And in the long run, it’s what will carry you to places talent alone never could.
