When you're in a moment of growth, stuckness, or change (and let’s be real, who isn’t these days?), it’s easy to wonder: Do I need a coach? Should I talk to a therapist? Would a mentor be better?

The truth is, all three have value – but they serve different purposes.

Here’s a breakdown to help you get clear on who does what, and when each one might be the right support for you.

Coaching – for clarity, confidence and future focus

Coaching is all about moving forward. It’s a partnership that helps you unlock your potential, make empowered decisions, and take intentional action. A coach isn’t there to give you answers – they ask the right questions so you can find your own answers. It’s active, future-oriented, and built around your goals.

Example: You want to change careers but feel overwhelmed about where to start. A coach helps you get clear on your vision, identify what’s holding you back, and build a step-by-step plan. You leave sessions feeling focused, motivated, and capable.

Best for:

  • Career or life changes

  • Goal setting and accountability

  • Building confidence and clarity

  • Breaking through limiting beliefs

Therapy – for healing, reflection and emotional resilience

Therapy is a safe, supportive space to explore the past, process difficult emotions, and work through challenges that might be affecting your mental health or wellbeing. Therapists are trained professionals who can support you in deep, transformative ways, especially if you’re dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, or old wounds that need care.

Example: You’ve been feeling anxious and stuck in unhelpful patterns since a breakup. A therapist helps you explore where that anxiety is coming from, process it in a healthy way, and learn tools to rebuild your emotional stability.

Best for:

  • Mental health concerns (like anxiety, depression, trauma)

  • Understanding emotional triggers

  • Building coping mechanisms

  • Inner healing and past experiences

Mentoring – for shared wisdom and real-world insight

Mentoring is about learning from someone who’s walked the path before you. A mentor offers guidance based on their lived experience – whether that’s in business, career, or life. It’s less about structured development, and more about real talk, useful advice, and someone championing you from the sidelines.

Example:You’re new to an industry and unsure how to navigate the unspoken rules. A mentor shares their journey, introduces you to helpful contacts, and gives you perspective when you hit bumps in the road.

Best for:

  • Navigating a specific industry or career path

  • Gaining practical, insider knowledge

  • Building networks

  • Learning from experience

So… Which one do you need?

Ask yourself:

  • Do I need clarity, motivation, or direction? → Try a coach.

  • Do I need healing, support, or a safe space to process emotions? → Consider therapy.

  • Do I need guidance, advice, or someone to show me the ropes? → Look for a mentor.

The beautiful part? These aren’t either/or choices. Many people work with all three at different times in life, depending on what they need. I’ve done all three, and each has served me in completely different ways.

Whatever support you choose, just know this: investing in yourself is never wasted time. Whether it’s unlocking your next step, healing something that hurts, or being guided by someone who’s been there – there is power in reaching out and saying, “I’m ready.”

Big changes start with small, brave moves.
