Let’s be real for a second. You spend thousands of pounds/euros/dollars, hundreds of hours, and way too many sleepless nights crafting the perfect marketing campaigns for your customers.
You obsess over the copy, the visuals, the vibes.
But when it comes to your own employees? They get a dry, 500-word email from "HR Notification No-Reply" sent at 4:45 PM on a Friday. If anything this week is going to give you the ick, it is this!
Then we wonder why nobody knows what the company mission is, or why that expensive new software you bought is sitting there collecting digital dust.
Enter Internal Marketing. It’s time to treat your team like your most important target audience, because, spoiler alert, they are.
What is Internal Marketing Anyway? (The Non-Boring Definition)
In plain English, internal marketing is the art of selling your company’s brand, goals, products, and culture to your own employees.
Think about it: if your team doesn't buy into what you’re doing, how on earth are they going to sell it to the rest of the world? You can’t expect your customer service reps to deliver "sparkling enthusiasm" if they feel like just another cog in a spreadsheet.
The Golden Rule: External marketing gets you customers. Internal marketing gets you the army of brand advocates who actually keep those customers happy.
When you do it right, internal marketing aligns your team, boosts morale, and stops people from violently rolling their eyes when leadership uses words like "synergy." (Another ick for you).
Here are my 3 sassy & sffective Internal Campaign ideas
Ready to move past the boring company newsletter? Here are a few campaign ideas that will actually get your team talking (in a good way).
1. The "Under the Hood" Product Launch
The Problem: You launch a massive new feature or product. The sales and dev teams are hyped, but accounting and HR have literally no clue what it actually does.
The Campaign: Treat your team like VIPs. Before the public launch, host an exclusive, internal-only "Sip & See" (or a virtual lunch-and-learn). Create a funny, 2-minute hype video featuring the people who built it. Give it the Apple-keynote treatment, complete with internal memes and bloopers.
Why it works: It makes everyone feel like an insider and creates genuine pride across departments, not just in the tech silo.
2. The "Culture Mythbusters" Campaign
The Problem: Your company values are listed on a intranet, but nobody actually knows what they mean in everyday life.
The Campaign: Launch a short-form video or Slack series called Company Values: Expectation vs. Reality. Feature leadership or popular team members acting out hilarious, exaggerated skits of what "Integrity" or "Radical Candor" looks like and what it doesn't look like.
Why it works: Humour breaks down walls at least 90% of the time. By poking a little fun at corporate cr*p, you make your actual values relatable and memorable.
3. The Peer-to-Peer "Grammys"
The Problem: Standard "Employee of the Month" programmes feel rigged, outdated, or corporate. (Like this isn't Wolf of Wallstreet).
The Campaign: Create a monthly or quarterly recognition campaign where employees nominate each other for hyper-specific, fun categories. Think: The Firewall Award (for the IT person who saved the day), The Ultimate Hype-Human (for the Slack user who reacts with the best emojis), or The Zen Master (for the project manager who keeps their cool during a crisis).
Why it works: People care infinitely more about appreciation from their peers than a generic shout-out from a VP they’ve met twice.
Here's your Friday takeaway (I'll have Veggie Burger please).
Stop treating internal communication like a chore. Your employees are bombarded with incredible content on TikTok, Instagram, and Netflix all day long, you are competing for their attention just like any other brand.
So, delete that boring email draft. Add some personality, throw in a GIF that actually makes sense, and start marketing from the inside out. Your retention rates (and your sanity) will thank you.
Need someone to make your internal comms actually... engaging? Let’s stop sending emails that go straight to the archive. I help brands build internal marketing campaigns that your team will actually want to read (and reply to).
